This is an
Indian fruit which is grown in water. Also called as water chestnut or “Bull
Nut” because of its shape. Ayurveda calls it “Shringatak” and in
India it is normally called as “Singhara”.
Its
nature per Ayurveda:
Ayurveda
calls this fruit as “Vrishya”, “Guru”, “ Ruksh” , “Madhu”
, “Balya” which means it increases sperm and nourishes other components (Dhatu)
of the body , heavy to digest , increases
dryness in the body ,sweet to eat and
gives strength to body. It is also mentioned as “Pragyasthapak” and “Mutral”
which means it nourishes brain and increases the amount of urine.
It is cold
for the body and fight “Pitta” imbalance which is increased acidity in
your body. Its purifies the blood.
Who could
benefit from it?
1) All healthy people.
2) One who feels too much thirsty
even after drinking enough water.
3) One who is suffering from hyperacidity.
4) One who is suffering from IBS , malabsorbption
, diarrhoea , ulcerative colitis, loose motion etc.
5) One who bleeds from nose, mouth,
sexual organs or bleeds during stool discharge.
6) Very effective for women who bleed
abnormally during cycles or premature bleeding pregnancy.
7) Males who suffer premature
ejaculation.
8) Who are exposed to heat for long
duration like in sun or in front of traditional bakery ovens.

How to
use it?
It is mainly
available in two forms in market. One is raw and other is flour. It is dried
and powdered for other seasons as it is available in winters only. Raw
chestnuts can be eaten directly after peeling off the skin. One can also boil the raw nuts in water and eat which really do not have any taste .However porridge
can be prepared with the flour in clarified butter. Fry the flour in clarified
butter (Ghee) till it turns light brown in color with a cooked aroma. Pour
boiling water per the amount of flour and add sugar to taste.
